Specialty Sleep Association Showroom Sets Record at Winter Vegas Market

25 percent increase in buyer attendance for SSA member exhibitors Innovation in bedding products drives buyer interest

February 22, 2012—Members of the Specialty Sleep Association (SSA) are extremely pleased with record activity in the SSA’s multi-exhibitor showroom during the recent Las Vegas Market. Featuring 35 SSA members, the 20,000-square-foot showroom (C1350) posted a 25 percent increase in attendance in buyer organizations.

SSA President Dale T. Read said 675 unique retail buyer groups and designers visited the organization’s showroom during the Jan. 30-Feb. 3 event, compared with 500 and 540 at the past summer and winter markets, respectively. He said buyers are attracted by manufacturers showing a range of innovative bedding and related products, including “cool” sleep items, adjustable beds, certified organic mattresses, and more.

“It’s an amazing record, and several new exhibitors will be joining us for the next Las Vegas Market,” Read said. “We’ve worked hard to promote the space among a growing list of interested and prospective buyers. Product- and profit-differentiation are in demand by the bedding retailer and our exhibitors deliver that. The SSA member exhibitors can also meet demand for products that address a host of consumer end-benefits, many associated with better sleep, and that’s invaluable to dealers and their RSAs.”

California based Supracor, which has a worldwide patent for a fusion-bonded honeycomb foam technology, will be among the new exhibitors in the SSA showroom in July after showing in a different area of the World Market Center earlier this month, said Steve Landi, director of business development. “The level of foot traffic in the SSA showroom was significant and the staff is so welcoming and helpful,” Landi said. “You could feel the energy in the space. The SSA showroom will be best for us to exhibit in the future.”

Dreampur, a Spain based distributor of viscoelastic and memory foam pillows with offices in Florida, also committed to membership in the SSA and plans to exhibit in the association’s space at the next winter Vegas market. The company’s goal is to promote awareness of their brand to prospective North American customers. “It was our first market and so we did not realize the showroom existed for our industry,” said Lissette Villamor, national accounts manager, based in Miami.” We were impressed with the quality of the meetings we witnessed [among SSA exhibitors].We wanted to join immediately.”

Among current SSA exhibitors, reactions to the February event have been overwhelmingly positive:

  • Mike Echevarria, national director of sales and marketing, Forever Foundations, Orange, CA. (bed foundations and frames): “We wrote new business with good-sized customers and are busy following up on leads. There’s a big awareness about the SSA for a lot of retailers now, and they know to look there for the specialty items like ours.”
  • Angela Owens, owner, Suite Sleep, Boulder, CO. (organic mattresses and bedding for the whole family): “I think it is a great opportunity for small to mid-sized businesses to show in the SSA showroom, because retailers are looking for unique products to differentiate themselves in the market and the SSA showroom offers buyers a one-stop shopping experience for all things Specialty Sleep.”
  • Mark Miller, president, InnoMax, Denver, CO. (adjustable beds and bedding products): “When you think of air flotation, fluid suspension, gel elements, his and her adjustability, and a host of wellness benefits for an aging population, you realize that until all sleep is suspended animation, we’re not done yet. There will always be opportunities for innovation and new products. ”Miller additionally serves on the SSA Board of Directors.

Naturepedic® To Introduce the First Certified Organic Encased Coil Luxury Mattress Line at Winter Las Vegas Market

Naturepedic (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) will debut their new first-of-a-kind luxury encased-coil certified organic mattresses at the Winter Las Vegas World Market Center. Naturepedic displays in the Specialty Sleep Association (SSA) Showroom C-1350.

The introduction includes a three-bed line up of first-to-market luxury encased-coil organic mattresses certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).

Naturepedic is a long-time leader in marketing GOTS certified organic mattresses to baby and kids specialty stores.  Over the past year, Naturepedic has conducted extensive market research and product development in an effort to provide a luxury certified organic mattress for adults.  “Adult consumers love certified organic, but they first want superior comfort and support,” says Jeff Cik, President of Naturepedic.  What makes this mattress line unique is that it features “an exceptionally comfortable and supportive encased-coil design, with the entire finished product (not just a portion of the materials) being GOTS certified.”  With the introduction of these first-of-a-kind encased-coil certified organic mattresses, the company now offers a three-bed line of luxury, competitively priced, certified organic mattresses for adults.

The Naturepedic introduction includes three premium luxury mattresses ranging from $2199 to $3299 for a queen set. This new line offers luxury sleep performance by providing superior comfort while still safeguarding the health and well-being of sleepers with a GOTS organic certified mattress.

Jeff Cik points out that the company is now producing these encased-coil units on its own state of the art equipment, adopting an individualized coil sewing technique using organic textiles rather than synthetic fabrics and glues. “No one else in the U.S. is doing this” states Cik. Using an encased-coil design offers superior comfort and support with a more attractive price tag than beds made entirely from natural latex. Cik states that the three new beds are available in “soft” and “medium” firmness options, with coil counts ranging from 1700 to 2200 coils per bed. Depending upon the model, mattresses come with straight-top and euro-top designs from 13 to 15 inches thick.

Barry Cik, founder of Naturepedic, reminds retailers that organic certification has been an important part of Naturepedic’s success with children’s furniture and bedding retailers. “We believe this will now be important for adult mattresses as well. We created this company to provide parents with a safer and healthier alternative to products containing questionable chemicals and allergens,” states Cik. “Now we can offer a luxury mattress to the adult market with the same health and safety qualities.”

Naturepedic is the only company to offer Level III documented mattresses under the Specialty Sleep Association (SSA) Environmental & Safety Program. The company has received numerous certifications, recommendations, approvals, and awards, including GREENGUARD (certified to their most stringent “Select” standard); Healthy Child Healthy World; Green America (“Approved for People and Planet – Gold”); and Organic Exchange. Naturepedic is an OTCO certified organic mattress manufacturer under the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). All Naturepedic products are Made in USA.

More Organic Bedding Product Options at Vegas Market

Bedding retailers have greater access to organic bedding products, including Vegas Market introductions from the Specialty Sleep Association (SSA) membership, both in and outside of the organization’s World Market Center showroom, space C-1350.

For consumers who are serious about organic goods, ‘green washing’ is not an option. Taking a leadership role in response to this consumer demand, the SSA, which launched the industry’s only Environmental and Safety initiative , a three-level product certification program for manufacturers, has retained members meeting the highest recognized standards for organic labeling.

Natura World and Organic Mattress, Inc. (OMI) are two SSA members featuring organic products in their respective showrooms, located in spaces A-946 and C-1515, at World Market Center. Naturepedic, specializing in youth bedding, and Innomax, with its mattress line focused on therapeutic benefits, will have independent spaces within the SSA showroom on the 13th floor of building C.

Bedding buyers will additionally want to stop in the 650-square-foot ‘Organic Pavilion’, also located within the SSA showroom, which debuts Aug. 1 – 5.

At least a half-dozen suppliers, including Suite Sleep, Sleep and Beyond, Supreme Quilting, Urban Woods, Latexco West, and Fabricadabra – with complementary products ranging from mattresses, top of bed items, wood furnishings, latex cores, and decorative pillows – will be showcased. Each vendor meets the highest certification standards relative to the products they manufacture, including certified organic, fair trade, low carbon footprint, and organic latex designations.

In part, the new display area was conceived to help retailers envision a different way to sell to this highly targeted audience, according to Angela Owen, owner of Suite Sleep and chief organizer of the Organic Pavilion. “The organic products will look designer-ready,” said Owen, “We want to dealers to know that merchandising this category does not have to be bland or boring.”

While in the new space, market attendees can learn more about the SSA’s Environmental and Safety initiative, where an information kiosk will be situated.
